Emerging Technologies

This week, my 1st hour students researched current emerging technologies.  They wrote a blog post about this new research which you can read here:

OpenEd.com is a free website from the ACT Academy that pulls content and resources from a variety of reputable sites.  Signing up is simple and syncs with your Google account.  When you register, you can select the grade and subject you teach as well as linking some textbooks.  You also have the option to specify which standard you'd like your lesson to focus on.  You can choose from the Resource Library based on subject, grade, or standard, or you can create your own lesson.  You can also choose the type of lesson your student(s) will receive. Rosters are uploaded from Google Classroom, and lessons can be assigned to all students or a select few for differentiation and extra practice. Students are given immediate feedback on how they do, and if they miss any questions, they are provided with videos and extra resources to reteach the missed content.  Teachers can also see immediate results on student work. Readsy

Readsy  is a free website that " help[s] you skim large amounts of text by focusing your eyes on one word at a time without having to move them."   It was created by a computer science undergrad at Princeton.  Readsy is a great tool for struggling readers or others that get overwhelmed by a lot of text at one time.  Retention and comprehension should not be affected. To get started with Readsy, visit the site and have some text in mind to use, or you can choose a sample and Readsy will choose text for you.  You can copy and paste a URL (news article, blog post, etc.), copy and paste text (Google Doc writing sample, or student work), type into the site itself, or upload a file.  Once you have copied/pasted or uploaded your text, click "Readsy". GoNoodle

GoNoodle is a free website designed to get kids moving.  The site can be used as an intro to class, a brain break, or preparation for a test.  As we enter testing season, the site also offers a host of meditation and breathing exercises to get students in the right mindset. The videos on GoNoodle can be searched by category and are all only a few minutes long.  While the videos may seem elementary, we all know that middle schoolers would get a kick out of them as well as benefit from the movement and break from their seats. There is a highlighted video every day and you have the ability to add videos to your Favorites list. Noisli and Hatnote  (my favorite site ever!!) are other sites previously referenced on this blog that could be utilized as brain breaks or to increase mindfulness.
