ClassLink Issues and Workarounds

The icon for ClassLink in the SMSD Macbook dock is what is called a web clip.  Web clips are direct links to specific URLs that can be accessed from the home screen without first opening a browser.  It's pretty much a fancy bookmark.  

We know that the ClassLink web clip is not always reliable, and many users rely on it for access to a variety of websites.  To that end, there is another way to access those same sites without the icon.

If you have ever had your students working collaboratively, then you might have found yourself reminding them to be mindful of their noise level.  Today's tip provides several websites that you can display for your students during group work time to indicate the volume of the classroom. I can imagine it was entertaining to watch me get these sample screenshots for you. 1. Bouncy Balls This one is probably my favorite.  Go to the bouncy balls website and display for your students.  You will have to allow access to the microphone with any of these sites.  Set the sensitivity of the microphone and watch the balls bounce around.  When students are too noisy, the balls bounce higher and a notification will appear.  You can choose what item is bouncing around (eyeballs, emojis, bubbles, and more). 2. GoNoodle

GoNoodle is a free website designed to get kids moving.  The site can be used as an intro to class, a brain break, or preparation for a test.  As we enter testing season, the site also offers a host of meditation and breathing exercises to get students in the right mindset. The videos on GoNoodle can be searched by category and are all only a few minutes long.  While the videos may seem elementary, we all know that middle schoolers would get a kick out of them as well as benefit from the movement and break from their seats. There is a highlighted video every day and you have the ability to add videos to your Favorites list. Noisli and Hatnote  (my favorite site ever!!) are other sites previously referenced on this blog that could be utilized as brain breaks or to increase mindfulness.

Podcasts in the Classroom

"In a  2014 article  published in the  International Journal of Speech-Language Pathology , Tiffany P. Hogan and others review the significant amount of research that indicates that “listening comprehension becomes the dominating influence on reading comprehension,” especially as children grow older."   Podcasting is audioblogging or audio broadcasting via the internet.  Students are responding so well to podcasts in the classroom because they are framed in a conversational tone, unlike audio books.   Listenwise is a site that houses shorter podcasts for student listening.  You log in with your Google account, and can search by content area or keyword to find a podcast to fit your curricular needs.  It even has a link where students can test their listening skills via Socrative.  Links to podcasts can also be posted to Google Classroom using the Listenwise feature: The site also has graphic organizers to correlate to each podc...
