Removing Extensions

This post primarily pertains to student device issues, but it is a good tool to keep in your back pocket if Chrome is acting wonky.

Extensions are "programs that can be installed into Chrome in order to change the browser's functionality."  I've blogged about them previously, and while extensions are primarily beneficial to the user, they can also bog down Chrome and end up making the browser less functional.  To that end, here's how to remove extensions from Chrome in the event you need another trick to try for students:

1. In Chrome, click on the 3 dots in the upper right

2. Choose Settings, then Extensions


3. REMOVE any Extensions that are not necessary for school.  For students, this is most of the ones listed. If you don't know what it is, remove it. :) 


This is just another thing to try if students are unable to open websites in Chrome or are getting frequently blocked messages.  Clearing the cache is also a good practice.

Insert Learning

InsertLearning is a Chrome extension that lets you turn websites, Google Docs/Slides, or PDFs into interactive lessons, and it is the perfect companion to your blended learning lesson plans.   Click here to give it a try or watch the tutorial below: To start using InsertLearning, visit the website and simply click "Add to Chrome" and you will see it appear in your toolbar.  Sign in using your school Google account info and follow the prompts for a short tutorial. With InsertLearning, you can highlight text, insert a question or a discussion topic, add sticky notes with links to outside sources (YouTube, etc.), and more.  All of this can be done on any website, Google Doc, PDF, etc.!! Classroom Screen: Widgets Galore!

Classroom Screen was created by a teacher in the Netherlands because he couldn't find all the tools he needed for his classroom in one place.  It's a website that displays multiple widgets at a time; ideal for bell work, exit tickets, group work, and more.
